Koblenz to Wurzburg along the Romantic Road Drive to Rothenberg Ob der Tauber Germany

Grape vines down the sides of the  road as we left Wurzburg and wheat crops everywhere closer to the river Main.

What we didn't realise was that the  poppy flowers grow wild not only in France and Belgium where we visited the World War One War Graves  but also far down south at Gunzburg In Germany we have found these flowers alomg side the road and in the paddocks.
We left Koblenz and followed the optimized route on the GPS and travelled along the Rhine River. We saw three castles along the river and drove past them and then headed over the mountains and saw the many colours of green and yellow fields .Without lying - i have to say that most days since Belgium we have had rain in the afternoon and around 16-18 deg c. We stayed overnight at Zur POst Hotel just outside Wurzburg. Their are trams running through this city too, although it is very small compared to Dusseldorf.
We had the best dinner at a German restaurant that evening. We actually had vegetables and they were lovely. Most places serve chip or pommes with meals and salad( if you ask for a salad) The Germans have a lot of Pizza places here and also turkish kebab places like we have. Their typical breakfast we have been having is bread and bread rolls with various meats including ham salami and devaon looking thing , some cereal like muesli corn flakes and coco pops , various cheeses, heaps of nutella spread and juice coffee tea. Tristan has been struggling with the breakfast - so we have bought weeetbix.

From Wurzburg we headed in the direction of Rothenberg Ob Der tauer which is about 100 kilometres . When we came into Wurzburg we found the Main River. As we headed south we followed the Main River and found a lock on the river. We parked down a side street and headed towards the riverbank and ended up right where the control area was for the lock. There were two boats in the lock waiting for the water to come down to the river level and we got lucky as we watched this happen in front of us. The boat dropped below the sides of the lock and the gates opened and the boats left to go up the river. As we looked to where the boats were, two boats were waiting for a green light signal so they can enter the lock and raise their boat  to enter the next part of the river.

We had a lot of rain on this drive and lots of sunny spots. We had a lovely lunch in a Bakery in a small town in the middle of nowhere.
