Morbegno Italian alps to Bernina pass st moritz Switzerland to landeck Austria 19.6.12

We met a lovely Australian family staying at our hotel in morbegno italy who were visiting family who owned the hotel and others in the area . They live in Five Dock Sydney . We headed towards the Bernina Pass from the Italian alps and drove past many towns with apple trees vines etc down the sides of the mountains and the train line along the road . We headed to a town called tirano and stopped there. This is where the Bernina express train comes into from the Swiss alps . We got lunch - bread rolls coldmeats and decided to drive up a mountain for the view and eat up there . We drive 1310 m high and zig zag tossed up the hill. We found an area near a water fountain . After we ate lunch we headed further up to 2909 M high . The view was spectacular we could see the towns further along the Italian alps as well as the Swiss alps . We headed towards the Bernina Pass and decided to head to St Moritz to check out the town . We were stopped at the Swiss Border just outside Tirano . Asked if we had meat , tobacco or Alcohol and headed up the mountain . The train runs on the road through some towns up the mountain . As we headed higher we could see lots of snow . There was also lots of roadworks on the road . The top of the pass had snow there or ice patches . The boys ran for the ice and threw it at each other . There was a hotel there and s little lake . As we descended down the hill we saw the train and stopped to watch it pass by . There were also two gondolas working taking people up the mountains .we headed to St Moritz and the lake looked beautiful . The buildings were stunning and we decided that it would be too expensive to stay there do we kept on driving towards Austria. We followed the huge river going down the mountains . There are so many motorcyclists on this road . You should see how the roads wind around the mountains and towns and the many zig zags up and down the hills . Thank goodness for the western Europe lonely planet book and the maps . We chose landeck and headed there . We drove down the hill crossed the river and before we knew it we saw the border check for Austria ( with no one there) and headed up the hill zig zagging for 10 turns and each one was numbered . We got to landeck at 730 pm and found a Gastoff to stay ! Hotel and restaurant . Gastoff Thurner . What I didn't realize was that we are smack bang in the middle of the Austrian Alp playground area ! A big town and we stayed at Zug .
